Omega - 3 Fish Oil
Omega - 3 Fish Oil
Omega-3 Fish Oil is a daily softgel supplying EPA and DHA — among the most studied nutrients in the supplement aisle, and one of the few most people genuinely do not get enough of.
EPA and DHA, and why the distinction matters
Omega-3 is not one thing. ALA comes from plants like flaxseed and walnuts. EPA and DHA are the long-chain forms found in oily fish, and they are the ones the research is built on.
Your body can convert ALA into EPA and DHA, but the conversion rate is poor — typically under ten per cent, and lower still for DHA. That is the practical case for fish oil over a plant source, unless you are vegan, in which case algae oil is the direct alternative. We compare them in omega-3 benefits, dosage and side effects: fish oil vs algae oil.
How to read an omega-3 label
This is where most people get caught. A 1000mg fish oil softgel is not 1000mg of omega-3 — it is 1000mg of oil, of which the EPA and DHA might be 300mg. The number that matters is combined EPA + DHA per serving, not the capsule size on the front of the bottle.

How to take it
With a meal containing fat. Omega-3 is fat-soluble, and taking it with food both improves absorption and largely prevents the fishy aftertaste people complain about.
Questions people ask
How do I stop the fishy burps?
Take it with your largest meal rather than on an empty stomach, and store the bottle in the fridge. Rancid oil is the usual culprit — if it smells strongly off, do not take it.
Do I need it if I eat fish?
If you eat oily fish — salmon, sardines, mackerel — two or three times a week, probably not. Most Australians do not.
Is it safe with blood thinners?
Speak to your doctor. Omega-3 has a mild blood-thinning effect, which matters if you already take anticoagulant medication or have surgery scheduled.
What should I take alongside it?
Omega-3 and a multivitamin cover the widest nutritional gaps for the least money. See Immuno 150.
